Description of A Nightmare on Elm Street
In this exciting action game based on the hit movie, you must find evil Freddy's house before he finds you, and enter it to rescue your friends. Freddy strangely disappears after you enter the house, but you must contend with the various nightmarish creatures. A fast, fun, but very short game if you're a good action gamer.

This was a favorite of mine as a child. The movie ANOES3 had come out several years earlier, but as a child, this game filled me with some of that same dread. The dos version had this monotone beeping sound, that somehow matched with what you'd expect in Freddy's creepy house. The graphics are very colorful and well done for the time period. As a top-view side scroller, this was one of the better ones of the time period. You start out in the town of Springwood, you are being chased by Freddy and you must find his house. You are looking for a house with dead trees around it and windows that flicker with light. Once you find the house, Amanda Kreuger will explain your quest. At this point you enter level 1 of Freddy's house. 1428 Elmstreet is a terrifying place! You will have to fight Freddy's minions ranging from charging wheelchairs like Will or a variety of different ghosts or slime monsters. Level 3 introduces a completely different look as you enter the green slime levels. There are cool graphics showing bodies trapped in green-slimed walls, colorful mushrooms and creepy mirrors. Level 3 is where you will encounter your first vending machine where you can spend your well-earned gold coins for items. Level 3 is the end of the linear progressive levels. You will encounter switches and have to figure out which portals to use. There are many 'secret' areas that take a long time to find, the most expensive item in the vending machines is a map of Freddy's house. This is a must have for the hardcore fan of this game. In the end you will fight Freddy, after finding some of his personal belongings (hat etc.). This fight is not easy, and it is in this fight that you realize that Nancy's dream power; Freeze Time, is one of the most powerful dream powers. If you are new to this game, start with Kincaid. His dream power; Power Punch is very useful for tunneling through walls and he is a well rounded character for the beginner player. Each character has their own power/soul pool and each have their own pros and cons. This game seems easy at first but to finish it is quite difficult. An important note; in the 80s it was common for games to use a very simple 'encryption' to prevent software piracy. Before fighting Freddy, he will ask you to pick a word that can be found in the original, enclosed manual. The word you want to choose is 'You'. Enjoy this game, its a classic. It takes some time investment, a lot of 'save game' but in the end, its so worth it!

I read that even though the c64 version is not as good graphically it has music. Can anyone confirm? Top casino site. I still have not gotten the c64 emulator, but I do plan too.

This game was great, and it was creepy as hell too. First the frantic dash to find his house before he finds you, then hours of great puzzles and action as he catches up to you if you take too long. Very entertaining, and a great game from Elm St Dream Warriors. Many of the powers looked cool or had their uses, but I chose Nancy and freeze time, which came in extra handy in the very hard end game. It took some work to figure out how to end him and the game.

The PC game is much different from the Nintendo game Rebecca but thanks for the anecdote. ; )
I have to second your feelings Mika. Played this game years back when I got it from Home of the Underdogs and the music and graphics are stuck in my head as well. It gives off nightmarish vibes just like the film. Mediocre gameplay but a great experience all around.
This was always one of my all time favorite Nintendo game and adventure island me and my cousin played those all the time when I was a kid my best friend who lived across the street gave me a Nintendo' that was pretty bad ass!

This is a surprisingly great old horror game with a few rpg-like elements. If you're a fan of the movies, or a horror fan in general I highly recommend this old abandonware.
Happy Halloween.

For some reason I always remember this game, even though I didn't play it much. The music and graphics are somehow stuck in my brain :-D

Freddy Krueger’s popularity extended beyond film, literature, and television. Video game companies also recognized potential in the Nightmare on Elm Street brand and produced video games based on the series. LJN, Ltd. produced a side-scrolling game for the Nintendo Entertainment System and ShareData, Inc. produced a game for the PC and Commodore 64. Both games were titled A Nightmare on Elm Street and released in 1989; however, they are entirely different games. Recently, Freddy Krueger again appeared in the gaming world, courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Platinum Dunes’ version of Freddy is a playable DLC warrior in Mortal Kombat for Xbox360 and PS3.
